Thurje Handmade is an Albanian artisanal brand and workshop dedicated to the creation of contemporary handwoven rugs that combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Founded in 2020, the brand was established with the vision of reviving the soul of Albania’s weaving heritage by transforming it to a canvas for contemporary art and design, adapting it to contemporary interior environments. The name “Thurje,” meaning “weaving” in Albanian, reflects both the physical craft and the conceptual approach behind the brand: weaving together tradition, design, and innovation. Weaving is Albania’s oldest language. For centuries, it has spoken in the past tense. Thurje Handmade does not ‘save’ this language, we weaponize it to speak of the future. We take the ancestral grit of the loom and use it to translate contemporary visions into architecture centerpieces. We are not preserving a craft - we are archiving the evolution of human imagination in wool. What distinguishes Thurje is its design-driven approach. Unlike purely traditional rug production, the workshop applies architectural thinking to the rug design, creating compositions that respond to spatial context, scale, color harmony, and interior functionality. This allows Thurje rugs to function as integral elements of interior spaces. We do not create décor. We build ‘Monoliths’. A Thurje rug is the anchor of a room, a heavy, silent coordinate that pulls the walls toward it. It begins in the high air of Korça. Here, time is measured in the rhythmic counting of the loom. We take the digital ghost of a design and give it the gravity of a mountain. We translate the screen into the fleece, the pixel into the knot, the vision into the friction. To stand on a Thurje rug is to feel the friction of a century under the arch of a bare foot. Thurje workshop is a place of collaborative heritage. We don’t just “hire” artisans and designers – we facilitate a conversation between an illustrator’s digital line and a weaver’s wool thread. At Thurje’s workshop there are currently weaving local artisans who possess generations of knowledge in traditional weaving techniques. By integrating these skills into a structured design process, the workshop produces rugs that maintain the authenticity of handmade production while meeting the expectations of contemporary architecture and interior design. The primary material used is natural sheep wool sourced locally, chosen for its durability, texture, and environmental sustainability. Each rug is carefully designed, developed, and produced through a process that emphasizes material integrity, craftsmanship, and thoughtful design. Our rugs aren’t just for looking at – they are high-quality, durable, and meant to be lived on. Customization is a central aspect of the brand’s work.
